My Internship at Ala Costa

Picture
My internship was  with Ala Costa Center in Berkley Site, which is where I currently volunteer at. There I am involved with a program that works with developmentally disabled children. It is designed to help disabled children develop skills in independent living, mobility, functional academics, social interaction and development, expressive/receptive language, fine arts and vocational readiness.

During my internship I assisted in my younger sister’s classroom, she has severe disabilities and suffers from CHARGE syndrome and behavioral problems. At Ala Costa I was trained by my work supervisor Thomas Krueger and I learned behavior guidance and techniques to assist developmentally disabled students become independent and self reliant. I worked with the disabled children and focused on Communication skills and team building. I really wanted to help out in the program to become closer with my sister and strengthen our relationship while helping other children in similar situations. Through my volunteering I was privileged to gain a better understanding of my sister’s life and other children with disabilities and gain a new perspective of life.
